In the last issue of Solid Ground, I raised a question that may have startled some readers. I asked if the current emphasis on “hearing” the voice of God is biblically sound. I say “startled” because for some people this is like asking, “Does Jesus love me?” or “Is God good?” What could be more obvious, biblically?
Pre-marital sex isn't God's design for human sexuality. And it's just not wise. If you want a guaranteed nomination for oddball of the year, announce to your friends or co-workers that you think sex is only for marriage. Most attempts to argue against abortion from biblical texts are misdirected. In the absence of scriptural references specifically to abortion, Christian pro-lifers quote equivocal passages.
If you “just take Christianity on faith” you may be in trouble…
Is Jesus of the Gospels simply recycled ancient myths? There is a reason the ancient historical accounts of the life of Jesus of Nazareth do not start with the phrase, “Once upon a time….” On the face of it, the authors did not appear to be writing fairytales for future generations, but rather detailed accounts of the extraordinary events in the life of a particular Jewish carpenter who actually changed the course of history.
Ethical Stem Cell Research: A Mass of Misconceptions On March 9, 2009, newly elected President Barack Obama signed an Executive Order entitled “Removing Barriers to Responsible Scientific Research Involving Human Stem Cells.”[i] The president’s order explicitly revoked President Bush’s Executive Order 13435 that, among other things, clarified certain limits on federal funding for research involving human embryonic stem cells.
