Truth Drives Us to Compassion

Alan's monthly letter for March 2013 Dear Friend, Today, more than ever, it is difficult to maintain a Christian view of sexuality, let alone homosexuality. For young people, it’s harder given the constant bombardment of pro- homosexual propaganda. It’s pushed in schools, promoted in television, and protected in law. If a student has any friends at all, there’s a good chance that one of them claims to be gay or has same-sex attractions. That might sound like an opportunity, but there’s a problem.

Is the Leviticus Prohibition of Homosexuality Irrelevant?

Alan's monthly letter for February 2013 Dear Friend, Skeptics of all stripes believe the book of Leviticus is irrelevant. Just cite the prohibition of homosexual behavior in Chapter 18 and brace for the impending attack. They’ll say something akin to, “Leviticus 19:19 says you can’t wear clothes made from two different linens or plant two different seeds in the same field. You don’t follow those rules, so why follow the homosexual ones?” They’re claiming you’re inconsistent.

Kingdom Impact

Alan's monthly letter for December 2012 Dear Friend, Our life is short. We strive to make a difference while we’re here. As believers, we’re not looking to make just any kind of impact, we want to have kingdom impact. I’m pleased to report that you and I accomplished that in 2012. We made a tremendous contribution for the cause of Christ because we partnered together. I’d like to give you some specific examples in the areas of my speaking, writing, and training. Speaking

Science as God

Alan's monthly letter for November 2012 Dear Friend, Secular culture has given God the boot. Science has emerged as the new religion and scientists are its priests. When truth is sought, science is consulted. When knowledge is needed, science delivers. When reason is employed, science is its master. People think scientific inquiry is the paradigm of truth and reason, but its importance has been exaggerated and misunderstood.

Social Justice Begins at Conception

Social justice is trendy nowadays. Homelessness. Poverty. Human trafficking. It’s cool to care about these social ills, even among non-Christians. Curiously absent from the list is abortion. Indeed, many people complain that Christians focus too much on unborn babies and not enough on born people. Jesus said nothing about abortion, but said plenty about the poor and the hungry. So why do I talk about abortion so much.

Compromise Is Not an Option

Alan's monthly letter for June 2013 Dear Friend, Do you agree with God? What would it take for you to declare something good that God says is bad? Money, power, or fame? Unfortunately, many believers are willing to part ways from Scripture for a lot less.

Less Is More: A Case for the Resurrection

Alan's monthly letter for July 2013 Dear Friend, Go ahead and skip church this Sunday. No need to give thanks for your next meal. You might as well throw this letter in the trash, too. Christianity is a meaningless religion and a waste of time…if…. If what? If the resurrection of Jesus is not a historical fact, your faith is a joke. Christianity stands or falls on whether Jesus of Nazareth walked out of His tomb the Sunday after His death.

Once Gay, Always Gay?

Alan's monthly letter for August 2013 Dear Friend, The “experts” have spoken. Change in sexual orientation is not possible. Homosexuality, we’re told, is an inborn and unchangeable trait, like eye color. Case closed. This implies that adolescents with same-sex attraction (SSA) or homoerotic dreams are manifesting symptoms of an underlying reality: They are homosexual. Because sexual orientation is fixed at birth (so the theory goes), these desires will endure through their teenage years and into adulthood.

How I Measure Success

Alan's monthly letter for September 2013 Dear Friend, “How do you stay positive when change seems impossible?” My wife’s question caught me off guard. I had just returned from working in Beirut, Lebanon, training Egyptian Christians in theology and apologetics. Although my training and overall trip went great, I shared with her a story that troubled me.

Leverage That's Global

Alan's monthly letter for October 2013 Dear Friend, Christians in Egypt are suffering. Their country has had two violent revolutions and three presidents in the last two years. Currently, they have no president. Fifty churches have been burned in the last month, and scores of Christians were targeted for no reason. The country is in chaos. What can we do? Nothing. At least, that’s what it seems like. The reality is, however, you’ve already made a difference to Christians living in this hostile environment.
