Lately, a single verse keeps resounding in my mind. It’s Revelation 3:2: “Wake up. Strengthen what remains and is about to die.” It was Jesus’ admonition to the church in Sardis, yet when I read it I ache for the church today, right now, right here among us—the cultural challenges Christians face, the struggles they’re going through with their faith, the compromises with truth they’re often making. It breaks my heart.
It also makes me mad. The enemy is right at the gate. That’s why I started our opening session at our sold-out reTHINK Apologetics Student Conference in Orange County in September—2,678 young people, parents, youth leaders, and adults—with these words: “We are at war.”
And we are. We are in the midst of a spiritual battle that threatens the foundations of Christianity. So many Christians are confused and faltering that we have been working double time to “strengthen what remains and is about to die.”
Much that now motivates me—and all of us on the STR team—is tied to that concern: How do we best strengthen a struggling church? Struggling parents? Struggling students? Struggling weak believers?
It’s one of the reasons I’ve completely revamped Tactics, adding six new chapters and 40% new material for the 10th anniversary edition. It’s been an invaluable resource for nearly 185,000 readers this last decade, and I wanted to add every new thing I’ve learned in the last 10 years about fruitfully engaging the culture with classical Christianity and classical Christian values—yet always in a thoughtful, winsome, and attractive way.
To celebrate the book’s release, if you donate $20 or more to Stand to Reason between now and the end of the year, we want to send you a signed copy of the all-new, completely revised and expanded Tactics, 10th Anniversary Edition as a way of saying thank you for your kindness. It contains lots of new content, including a new chapter describing a tactic I’ve been using fruitfully for years—I call it “Inside Out”—and a new chapter on “Mini Tactics” describing five simple maneuvers to make Christians’ conversations more productive than ever.
We’ll also send you a special code to download a video of Alan, Tim, and me speaking on the topic “Tactics in Engaging False Ideas”—a session from our reTHINK Apologetics Student Conference—to say thank you for your generous gift.
After Jesus’ warning in Revelation 3, He told Sardis to “Remember…what you have received and heard; hold it fast” (v. 3). At STR, we remember. And we are holding fast to the faithful word, deeply committed to strengthening that which remains—both for old and for young, passing the baton aggressively to the next generation.
With your help, we are forging ahead boldly, creatively, and faithfully, advancing our vision of “Confidence for every Christian, clear thinking for every challenge, and courage and grace for every encounter.”
